The Papal States

The Stamps of the 1852/67 Issue

by Peter N.G.Rayner

(published 2008)

This book is the result of many years research by Peter on this pioneering series of stamps. The book is in two parts, the first being a completely revised edition of his monograph written in the 1990’s, now fully illustrated, mainly in colour, and the second part a new in-depth study of the papers on which the stamps were printed.

In part one, Peter describes how he went about the huge task of acquiring, classifying and researching all aspects of these stamps. In particular, all the stereotype defects are described and illustrated.

In part two, all aspects of the papers used are examined in detail, including the weave, thickness and translucency, and the difference between hand-made and machine-made papers. Tables and graphs show the frequency with which each variation of paper and colour are found for each value.

Finally, the data which Peter has accumulated and upon which his findings are based are included on a computer CD in the back of the book.

The book is A4 size, 92 pages (30 in colour) and is priced at  £35  (plus P&P UK = £3, Europe = £6, ROW = £10):-
